Systems Administrator - Release Engineer
Job Description:
The Release Team is critically inserted in the software development flow at Wireless Generation. The primary role of this position would be to schedule, document, package, automate and deploy all software changes from development to production on all of Wireless Generation's platforms. We make sure that what runs in production is consistent, sane and expected. We strive to support changes as fast as the business requires it without compromising the integrity of the production systems of the services that our customers use daily. The successful candidate would have systems administration expertise (mainly Unix) with strong scripting and development skills. The candidate should embrace the spirit of DevOps, which implies continuous collaboration and communication between Ops, Dev and QA.
Responsibilities of the Systems Administrator - Release Engineer:
Support and improve our tools for release management and deployment, heavily relying on automation.
Stage new releases and promote them to production
Troubleshoot deployment issues on development and live systems until the problem is fully understood and its effects mitigated
Proactively monitor and audit the health and availability of systems being released and ongoing critical jobs.
Develop internal documentation for key systems and services.
Develop tools and processes to automate tasks.
Help foster best practices that help ensure completeness and availability of our applications.
Deploy and ensure proper instrumentation of software components
Measure and report the risk/impact of changes to our platforms
Work closely with other Operations, Development and QA teams to aid in the successful release of software.
Assist and support the Development team's efforts troubleshooting complex application issues.
Requirements of the System Administrator - Release Engineer:
BS in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience is required.
At least 3 years experience in systems administration, software engineering and/or release engineering
Strong familiarity with software configuration management, svn and git experience highly desired
Solid understanding of scalable web architecture and application server technologies (apache, lighttpd, jboss, tomcat), caching technologies (memcached), file systems (LVM,ext3/ext4/XFS), and databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
Highly skilled in major scripting languages, a bash/python combination ideal
Experience with centralized deployment and configuration management systems (e.g., bcfg2, chef, Capistrano, puppet)
Experience with Linux package management systems (e.g. rpm, DEB)
Experience with Cloud computing a plus.
