Do you have what it takes to compete for a finance job in New York? From entry-level work to senior finance jobs, there are plenty of people standing in line to apply, but fewer are using all the tools at their disposal to land the interview and get the gig. How can you move to the front of the pack? It takes a combination of talent, planning, and good old-fashioned networking to do your job search justice.
Get Online Naturally, the first thing you should do is post your resume and credentials online. Create an online career portfolio complete with a photo, short bio and your experience relevant to landing New York financial jobs. Don’t bother with unrelated details, concentrate on what a hiring manager expects to find on your resume. Does your resume look a bit short? Do you need to boost your clout in the experience department? Read on.
Add Experience If you’re right out of college and looking for a finance job in New York, any experience you have will help, but what are you doing right now to add to that experience? Consider taking a volunteer position for a non-profit or charitable organization and lend your skills as an advisor, financial planner or in some other capacity that helps your resume. Any experience you gain helps your job hunt, and when you tell an employer you’re working with a local cause it shows you’re a more well-rounded person—an attractive candidate for any company.
Increase Your Clout If you have a knack for writing, consider contributing articles or guest blog posts to financial websites. This is another activity that may not land you a job, but definitely gives you a competitive edge when comparing resumes.
Don’t Forget To Network In all of these activities, you’re going to meet people along the way who might be able to help you out. Finance jobs in New York City aren’t just available through the job listings. Some are never advertised—candidates are acquired via recommendation or from within. You never know whom you’ll meet when volunteering or contributing your time, be prepared to make an impression and take advantage of an opportunity when it presents itself.
One thing some networkers forget to do is to let people know they’re actively looking for work. It’s good to be perceived as someone who isn’t just looking for an inside line on a job, but by the same token if your new contacts don’t know you need work, they can’t help you. It’s not easy to find the balance in the early days of your networking efforts, but you will…make sure you tactfully let your contacts know when you need a helping hand.
